N7CAL.COM is a website dedicated to the art of ESSB. It is a mode that brings out the best in audio quality and at times, the worst in ham controversy. Here at N7CAL.COM I will endeavour to explain my journey through this realm of the hobby. I will describe all the things that I have done wrong and how I came to the current configuration of my station.
There has been a lot of conversation about the exact nature of ESSB. Many who came before me have already led the charge to establish ESSB and have endured the conflict of establishing their right to practice ESSB.
For me ESSB has become my own venture into a realm of the hobby that keeps me invigorated and challenged. That is what has given me the drive to establish my own brand in ESSB.
When I first got into ESSB I really didnt know what I was searching for. I had heard a few guys that impressed me with the purity of the sound they had. All of this was before I really had even heard a true ESSB signal. In other words, those first signals I heard were 3K wide but very balanced. It wasn't until I heard the likes of WZ5Q, NU9N, KA0KA and others, that I started to get a little better grip on the exact nature of ESSB and the possibillities. Up until that time I was running the 870 and was throwing all kinds of behringer stuff at it in an attempt to create something that the 870 was unable to achieve.
I have made to major moves in an attempt to transmit a true ESSB signal. I got a modified Yaesu FT 1000 MP MKV that is capable of transmitting a flat 6K signal as well as receiving 6K flat, the other move I made was to almost exclusively tube gear. I really like the sound that the tube gear provides. That smooth tube sound and the more analog sound is, to my ear much more pleasing.
For me, developing a smooth pleasing sound that I am comfortable with was my goal. To know that I can sit back and put out something that is pleasing for the listener as well has been my goal. The tube sound is something that I grew to love as I started to put it together. In my opinion ESSB is a full, balanced, pleasing sound that makes for a comfortable communicating experience.
